New Yorker Rides Bicycle To The Sun.

image

One of the most famous downhill bike rides is Haleakala crater on Maui Hawaii

image

I, of course, decide to bike up. From sea level to 10000 feet high. On a crappy rental bike.

image

Feeling optimistic, I leave the ocean in my wake.

image

No surprises yet

image

14 miles and I hit the crater base.

image

Starting to see clouds.

image

I can feel the mist.

image

Half way

image

Coming out of the clouds I can see I have a long way to go.

image

6000 feet and nothing but sun.

image

Starting to remember 8th grade science…. Volcanos get steeper as you go up!

image

I become increasingly defiant!

image

Almost 8000 feet I can feel my heart pounding.

image

Home stretch. But still a long way to go.

image

8500 starting to feel dizzy from the altitude.

image

Total silence.

image

Renee took this shot from above me and if u click on it I’m the insignificant spec in the middle.

image

I feel like I biked to the moon

image

It’s 40 degrees up top. People are handing me beers and Renee keeps telling me I’m crazy.

image

Top of the world ma!

image

Bonus pic. My support team. Renee, I couldn’t have done it without you.

8 miles of up

image

We set out to Hanakapi’ai falls for an 8 mile hike

image

8 miles. No biggie. Right?

image

First mountain. Check!

image

Bamboo Forrest.

image

Random beach with sign claiming 82 people killed here so far. Mostly New Yorkers no doubt

image

Switching to amphibious mode.

image

4 wheel drive. Engage!

image

Parkour!

image

Mud

image

I see it. Woop!

image

Yep. It’s a Jurassic park moment.

image

And no, there is not a bus back. It rained most of the way home and we did not care.

image

Bonus pic. Renee at the finish line. Still smiling.

Where else can you bike in a cave ? Near Haena Beach Park.

Rough surf on the north shore stopped the boys on this particular day, but they later found an awesome snorkeling spot on the south shore near Poipu.

What a life! Raw ahi tuna poke and spicy lobster salad. A picnic in a parking lot.

We showed Horatiu a great farmers' market in Kapa'a. This time we were adventurous... jackfruit, sour sop, egg fruit, rambutans, apple bananas, papaya and taro mochi cake too.

A little rain didn't deter us from riding. And we were rewarded. The boys found some of the best fruit right on the side of the road...delicious, ripe Clementines. Sweet!

“Sunshine” Market

We seek out every farmers' market we can find... Even in the rain.

This pineapple smelled delicious. Ripe and ready to eat.

Papayas, mangoes and avocados will do that to you…

This guy had the tastiest mangoes, and we had fresh coconut water some translucent coconut flesh too.

Bonus pic: lunch later that day... Ron's dragonfruit bowl with acai, mango, bananas, pineapple and kiwi, and my chunky monkey acai bowl with peanut butter and banana, oh and kale too, topped with strawberries, bananas and granola.

Fine dining. With bikes!

image

Tonight we hit the streets for some fine dining

image

The streets were empty

image

Dark and rainy.

image

We arrive at red salt restaurant. The valet says we are the first people to ever arrive at this place for dinner on bikes. I’m so proud.

image

He still parked our bikes. Yes!

image

Bonus pic. The chicken cooked in foie gras was amazing.
