One of the most famous downhill bike rides is Haleakala crater on Maui Hawaii
I, of course, decide to bike up. From sea level to 10000 feet high. On a crappy rental bike.
Feeling optimistic, I leave the ocean in my wake.
No surprises yet
14 miles and I hit the crater base.
Starting to see clouds.
I can feel the mist.
Half way
Coming out of the clouds I can see I have a long way to go.
6000 feet and nothing but sun.
Starting to remember 8th grade science…. Volcanos get steeper as you go up!
I become increasingly defiant!
Almost 8000 feet I can feel my heart pounding.
Home stretch. But still a long way to go.
8500 starting to feel dizzy from the altitude.
Total silence.
Renee took this shot from above me and if u click on it I’m the insignificant spec in the middle.
I feel like I biked to the moon
It’s 40 degrees up top. People are handing me beers and Renee keeps telling me I’m crazy.
Top of the world ma!
Bonus pic. My support team. Renee, I couldn’t have done it without you.
WooHoo!
Holy cow!!! That is quite a feat……..
Whoa…what a trip, and naturally you did it…and you were happy…NO…I am not biking it…I leave it for the pros…Yvonne
Total badass!
Hey, those are beautiful pictures. You look happy, glad it was fun.
Fantastic !! That’s a day well spent. Good goin
Congratulations but sadly think about all the snow you’re missing at home.
Ron,
I have never commented on the blog but followed every post. I felt that with this epic entry I could break my silence! I made the panoramic of you as a spec my background. This is a truly incredible achievement and a beautiful landscape. It almost makes me question if Kuiai was the Island to visit! Congratulations and keep on trucking buddy!

Thanks everyone for all the support. I am still recovering from the incredible sunburn I got. Especially inside my lips. Guess I forgot to keep my mouth shut. Ha. But, unbelievably I was able to ride the next day. Does Everest have a bike path?
Hi Guys!
Heidi forwarded your blog to us, hope you don’t mind, and we loved looking at the pics! Congrats, Ron on a real accomplishment! It took us back to our trip to Maui in 1991 and our DRIVE up Haleakala. From coast to crater I remember we went through 4 different climates and vegetation’s. Amazing! Hope you are loving Maui as much as we did.

I still can’t believe you biked that whole way. You are a lunatic! I sent you those zipline photos. Thanks again for coming with us. Hope y’all enjoy the rest of your time in Hawaii!
