Key Largo 2/13

Key Largo, FL:  Ahhh… the Florida Keys.  There is no place else quite like the keys. We drove down from Boca, and we just felt happy.  Our hotel is a series of cottages, right on the bay.  There are bikes paths all along Route 1 here.

Key Largo: this is the view from our cottage. Simple beauty right out the sliding glass door.

Tavernier, FL: We biked down to see the bird rescue sanctuary. We saw recuperating and/or sheltered pelicans, ibises, cormorants, turkey vultures, owls, hawks, falcons, plus a parrot, a cockatoo, and even a friendly bluejay.

Key Largo, FL: our Boca friends Billy and Jenn couldn't resist the keys. They visited us on our first full day here. (it's less than a 2-hour drive for them). We biked all over with them, including the Ocean Grill, right on an ocean pier.

Bike & Bite

Our bike adventures often include food.  (almost always.. ha!)

Ron suggested that we include a “bike & bite” update from time to time.

Bike & Bite – Key Largo, FL 2/28/13

We took a night ride for dinner and dessert.  (Remember, there’s an excellent bike path here).  We went to locally-owned son and mother restaurant, Category 3.  I’d read that they were famous for burgers, and I don’t eat too much beef, but I thought we’d give it a shot.  Excellent food, friendly service, and we ended up chatting with the owner, Bill.  We’re already planning to stop by on our way back north in a month.

Bill the owner took this pic for us next to his smoker.

Ron and I split the Cat V burger stuffed with jalapeño, bacon, pepper jack cheese and topped with (fresh, hot) jalapeño.

Dessert #1: we got a bourbon bacon brownie to go from Cat 3. Dessert #2: locals recommended Mr. C's homemade coconut ice cream. We also tried the awesome peanut butter ice cream. (Good things we've basically only eaten fish during the last week).

Boca 2/13

Boca Raton, FL:  neither of us had ever been to Boca… but we were inspired by Ron’s old NYC friend Billy Boo to come for a visit.  Billy and Jenn live right on the Atlantic Ocean, with an incredible view of the sand, sea and sun.  We had a lot of fun getting to know the area, and we had a great time with Billy and Jenn, plus their bengal cat and bearded dragon.  They took us to the in-the-know places to eat, and introduced us to the local iPic movie theater, which was cool. PLUS, Jenn set us up with this blog.  ((Thanks!!))

Exclusive shops, restaurants and cars here. See and be seen.

Getting cozy

Boca Raton, FL: getting cozy at the movies, where there are big leather recliners, blanket and pillows, plus waiter service for food and drinks. Ron’s M&Ms came in a martini glass. Classy.

Boca Raton, FL: the Boca bike shop had a critical mass ride one night and we joined about 40 other bikers for a cruise through town. It was liberating to be out in the beautifully warm evening, racing around on our bikes.

Vero 2/13

Vero Beach, FL… we spent about a week here.  With our bikes we stretched up to Sebastian, and down to Fort Pierce.  We met some fun locals, had lunch with our PA cousins, and biked with some NJ cousins.

Vero Beach, FL: good biking around town.

Fort Pierce Inlet Park… we had to pay $2 per bike, but it was worth it just for the thrill of thinking we might actually see a bobcat. We didn’t spot one, but we did see a raccoon hanging out by the ranger station
