Key Largo 2/13

Posted by on March 1, 2013

Key Largo, FL:  Ahhh… the Florida Keys.  There is no place else quite like the keys. We drove down from Boca, and we just felt happy.  Our hotel is a series of cottages, right on the bay.  There are bikes paths all along Route 1 here.

Key Largo: this is the view from our cottage. Simple beauty right out the sliding glass door.

Key Largo, FL: almost every evening has an awesome sunset spectacular.

Tavernier, FL: We biked down to see the bird rescue sanctuary. We saw recuperating and/or sheltered pelicans, ibises, cormorants, turkey vultures, owls, hawks, falcons, plus a parrot, a cockatoo, and even a friendly bluejay.

Key Largo, FL: our Boca friends Billy and Jenn couldn't resist the keys. They visited us on our first full day here. (it's less than a 2-hour drive for them). We biked all over with them, including the Ocean Grill, right on an ocean pier.

A nice woman in a kayak took our picture for us.

This is from the opposite point of view, with the setting sun reflected in our faces.

Key Largo, FL: we were biking to lunch at the same time as our cottage neighbors, and they invited us to join them for lunch, and a tour around town.

Key Largo, FL: we were biking out of the hotel at the same time as our cottage neighbors Marv and Mary Lou, and they invited us to join them for lunch and a tour around town.  We ate right in a marina at the Pilot House restaurant, which has a glass bottom bar.  (Marv remembers one time a drunk guy jumped in the water to swim under the bar and he got attacked by a bunch of tarpon and came up all bloody… whoa.)

Thanks Jenny… we’re having a “cold” wave too. Spring is just around the corner though…
