Our aunt and uncle's neighbor, John, said he'd show us around. A retired physician, John is 80-years old and a regular cyclist.

We kept a nice pace along Pinellas Trail and chatted as we went. Good thing we met John when we did... He's leaving for Colorado to go skiing for his 81st birthday.

Train/bike journey to FLA

We like to think that we travel lightly! Two bikes in travel bags, and two backpacks. Simple style.

Two bikes in travel bags, and two backpacks. We depart right from New York City’s Penn Station. Simple style.

Except Amtrak had different ideas. Only bikes are permitted in bike bags, with a maximum weight of 50 pounds. Although they have a provision for oversize bags (+$20), this does not allow for overweight bags. OH. As a result we had to remove bike tools, clothes and toiletries right there at the baggage desk, sheesh.

Dee-luxe accommodations. Private room with a couch that turns into a bed, and a private toilet too. At just twice the price of a plane trip!

Ron's got his iPad, but it's fun to just sit and watch the world go by.

Amtrak is experimenting with ways to reduce costs, so they removed the dining car from the Silver Star line. Not too convenient! Luckily we brought camping food that just needs hot water to rehydrate. Pretty tasty!!

Yeah Ron, you'd better find a way to get comfortable... We're on this train for 25 hours!

Tuesday night adventure

After a couple of days of not-so-fun appointments, Ron and I had a nice night out.

We headed through Times Square on our way out tonight.

We headed through Times Square on our way out tonight.

The Illusionists on Broadway! We got VIP parking out front. Noteworthy.. when we were unlocking our bikes after the show the sidewalk was crowded and Ron got frisked by a woman feeling his jacket tapping back packets, looking for his wallet. She came up empty handed (Ron keeps a small card case in his front pocket), and she quickly blended into the crowd.

Slow roll Sunday

Bruce & Linda came into NYC for a visit today.

We biked from Manhattan to Queens over the 59th St Bridge, then from Queens to Brooklyn over the Pulaski Bridge, pictured here.

We brunched at Bakeri in Greenpoint. Loose leaf tea, soft scrambled eggs, kale salad and smoked whitefish. The weather was so nice, we ate outside!

Never a dull moment

We attended the holiday brunch of the Daughters of the American Revolution. We had a really nice time!

Afterwards, I couldn't unlock my lock! Some nice guys from San Fran stopped by to see if they could help, but nope, still locked. (Looks like autumn!)

Although Ron wasn't feeling well, he biked downtown to help me. He brought oil and liquid wrench, but the key still wouldn't insert all the way. (Notice that it's gotten dark by now).

So I called a locksmith. He brought an electric plug-in side grinder and went to work.

After Ron worked on the lock for 45 minutes I called a locksmith. He brought an electric plug-in side grinder and went to work on cutting off the lock.

In the meantime the NYPD showed up. Yep, someone had reported us. (Good!!) ((Police activity on St Marks St!!)

In order to prove that the bike was mine, I pulled up this blog on my phone and showed them a picture of me on my bike. : ) A total of six officers showed up.

A total of six officers showed up.. two cruisers with two officers each, and two on foot.

The locksmith cut one side of the lock and then tried to twist it off... hahaha! He had to cut the second side as well. The whole process took him at least 20 minutes! This is a new version of the Fahgettaboudit lock with a redesigned key. I think Kryptonite has some explaining to do.
